The implementation of the controversial new waste and contaminated soils law ("Ley de Residuos y Suelos Contaminados”), which could allow for the introduction of a deposit system for beverage containers modelled on countries such as Germany, is causing heated debates in Spain. According to the Spanish environment ministry, Spain’s upper parliamentary chamber approved the new law on 22 June. With this law Spain is implementing the European Waste Framework Directive (2008/98/EC).
