Mineral oil detected in advent calendars

After weeks of relative quiet, the latest headlines about mineral oil being found in food will likely not put parts of the packaging industry in the festive spirit. The German consumer group Stiftung Warentest has recently warned about the presence of mineral oil residues in children‘s advent calendars. Stiftung Warentest said that packaging made out of recycled board, but also machinery oil from the production chain and mineral oil-containing ink used for packaging printing were sources of the mineral oil detected in chocolate. Aromatic mineral oils, which are classified as being more serious than others, had been detected in nine calendars, three of which were also contaminated with non-aromatic hydrocarbons.
