D: Corrugated board industry reports weak demand and high costs in 2022

Germany’s association of the corrugated board industry (VDW) published a review of the past financial year and made a forecast regarding the current financial year.

There was market distortion resulting from Russia’s war against Ukraine, the energy crisis and an increasingly poor consumer sentiment, the association says in its review. The German corrugated board industry was hard-hit by this development because more than two thirds of all goods transported in Germany are packaged in corrugated board.

As far as deliveries are concerned, the VDW member companies registered a year-on-year decline of 635 million m2 or 7.3 per cent in 2022 to 8.03 billion m2. According to the association, when making this comparison, it must be taken into account that in 2021 the sector had achieved an even stronger increase in deliveries. Nevertheless, the figures meant that existing capacities had remained unused last year, it said.
