The British recovered paper market: Industry fears a collapse in collection volumes

The British recovered paper market was not hard hit yet by the ramifications of the coronavirus crisis as mid-March arrived.

Demand was subdued in the UK and Continental Europe, but more material was headed to Asia. Collection volumes were described as normal for March. However, the increase in panic buying would likely result in a small "Christmas effect” in March, respondents said.

Market players are most concerned about the trend in collection volumes and structures. Experts wonder whether collection structures can be maintained due to a shortage of drivers and cargo space as a result of restrictions put in place by authorities or due to staff illness or quarantine.
