The German commodity plastics market: Demand below expectations at the start of 2022

The year 2022 got off to a bumpy start on the standard commodities plastics market.

Many companies did not return from their winter break until the second full week of January and - contrary to the forecasts made by producers and distributors – placed only few orders. The restrained demand is sometimes the result of disruptions to supply chains made vulnerable by the pandemic and its effects, according to market sources. Converters were not taking any chances and have been stocking typo3/their warehouses to avoid production downtimes due to feedstock shortages, EUWID was told. "We see that many of our customers were well stocked at the beginning of the year and are working with typo3/inventories," said one polymer supplier. Whether inventories are now experiencing a renaissance, however, remains to be seen, he added.
