The German commodity plastics market: Weak demand meets solid supply in February

As in the previous month, demand for standard commodity plastics was subdued in February.

Contrary to expectations, most suppliers said they had not achieved their planned volumes, particularly in the area of PE plastics. The low purchasing interest was explained on the one hand by the fact that converters still had sufficient stocks. On the other hand, they were possibly counting on falling prices, because the solid supply of plastics in Europe was putting prices under gradual pressure.

At the same time, however, EUWID respondents pointed to the development of costs for upstream products such as naphtha, ethylene and propylene: these climbed in February, providing plastics prices with an upward thrust for March.
