The German lightweight kraft paper market: Full order books and high capacity utilisation

High demand and rising prices were the order of the day on the German market for lightweight kraft paper (40g) at the start of March.

New customers had virtually no chance of placing orders with paper mills, while regular customers had a hard time getting suppliers to accept additional orders, industry sources reported. At the same time, bag and paper packaging manufacturers were enjoying brisk demand from customers, including those in the food industry and retailers.

The market for brown and white lightweight machine-glazed kraft paper (MG kraft paper, 40g) was witnessing persistently strong demand in early March. Sales markets such as e-commerce and food were fuelling unrelentingly brisk demand. What is more, projects planned in recent years to replace plastic with paper solutions were now coming to fruition, paper manufacturers and converters said. This development affected the non-food segment, too. Demand in the standard pastry and butcher bag business tended to be normal, though. With demand high, the MG kraft paper market was facing a scarcity of material.
