On 28 March British Environment Minister Michael Gove announced that a deposit return scheme for single use drinks container will be introduced in England, subject to consultation later this year.
The consultation is to look at how the scheme would work and how deposits and other measures could be used to raise recycling rates.
The consultation is to incorporate the views of plastics manufacturers, suppliers and consumers and to "sit alongside" a package of wider reforms of the current packaging waste system.
These are to be meant to provide producers with greater incentive to take responsibility for the impacts of the products they make. It is currently intended to include all types of single use drinks packaging - whether plastic, glass or metal - in the new programme.
