EUWID’s focus on bioplastics: production of bio-based polymers on the rise

Growing demand for drop-in-solutions for packaging

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) presented in November has given new impetus to the debate on the use of bio-based and biodegradable plastics. EUWID took this as an opportunity to ask to what extent bioplastics are currently used in packaging and in which applications. The respondents’ conclusions were positive: Especially, bio-based alternatives to conventional plastics are produced, researched and in demand in Germany. The packaging market plays a key role in the use of bioplastics. According to estimates by the German Institute for Bioplastics and Biocomposites (IfBB) 40-50% of bioplastics production worldwide in 2022 was for packaging applications. This corresponded to a volume of 1.1m t of bioplastics.
