German recyclers feel shortfall caused by exemption from energy levy

The lifting of the recycling industry’s exemption from the renewable energy levy continues to be a source of vexation on the waste plastics market as this raises the companies’ electricity costs. Affected businesses are short between €300,000 and a €1m. It remains unclear whether Brussels will end its illegal state aid investigation of the German Renewable Energy Act (EEG) or how Germany’s Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA) will decide cases in which the lifting of the exception has been contested.
