The mood on Germany’s cartonboard and folding box market is grim and the situation seemed unclear at times in early September.
Cartonboard and folding box producers told EUWID that the industry was proceeding cautiously amidst economic headwinds and the constant increase in electricity and gas prices. Cartonboard mills and folding box producers encountered a pronounced slowdown in order intake across all grades at the start of the month. Orders were being placed hesitantly. Consumer goods manufacturers and retailers were increasingly scrutinising agreements, with delays in call-offs and order cancellations reported.
At the same time, inventories of cartonboard and folding boxes seem to be high along the supply chain in many instances.
