Poland: paper and board markets start into the year 2023 with mixed prospects

Paper and cartonboard manufacturers and their customers in Poland are starting the new year with a great deal of uncertainty.

There is relatively broad consensus throughout the market that at least the first three months are likely to remain challenging. High energy prices and weak consumer sentiment will adversely affect business. Insiders tend to think that demand for paper will subside.

What is more, competition from paper suppliers outside Europe, especially from Asia, looks set to intensify. Freight rates have fallen, with exports from China to Europe on the increase due to lacklustre demand for paper and cartonboard in the People’s Republic. Talking about the final quarter of 2022, many paper and cartonboard producers from different segments complained about insufficient demand.
