The new year began on the same note as the old year had ended on the French cartonboard market.
Demand did not improve, with cartonboard producers reporting unchanged poor order inflow, especially for recycled board. Whereas until six months ago buyers had to plan their purchases months in advance, cartonboard is now available at much shorter notice.
The overall price level for primary fibre as well as recycled cartonboard moved lower in January, largely because energy surcharges, which sometimes still applied until December, were lifted.
