The German commodity plastics market: orders sluggish in weakening economy

Resin prices decouple from movement in monomer prices

Prices on the market for standard commodity plastics declined in August.

Against the backdrop of an increasingly weak economy, souring consumer sentiment and concerns about a recession, manufacturers, distributors and merchants selling standard commodity plastics reported sluggish order intake. The downturn was not solely attributable to the summer holidays. Cancellations were piling up. The situation was difficult. August sales were "very, very restrained" and it was now very solidly a buyer's market for primary plastics. One could definitely speak of a summer slump. Only those who really needed material were buying. On the price front, quotations continued to spiral downward from July levels and cuts exceeded the reductions of the monomers, in some cases significantly.
