The German paper and board market: price cuts under discussion for brown kraftliner

Demand for cores and coreboard has settled down in recent weeks

Not much has happened in the German corrugated case material business in August. Brown grades tend to be under pressure within the kraftlinersegment. But most prices stayed the same, even though demand was subdued and inventories high. “Normalcy is a thing of the past,” one EUWID source remarked. Uncertain buyers are taking a very restrained approach to price negotiations. Just a few big buyers claim to have lowered prices. Europe is importing more unbleached kraftliner from the US than last year, but generally much less than in previous years. AF&PA reported that almost 400,000 t of US brown kraftliner had been exported to Europe in the first half of 2020, while exports reached 250,000 t only in the same period this year. European buyers are tending to exercise caution; shipping is expensive, and delivery dates are hard to gauge. Prices for autumn deliveries are apparently in decline....
