French government adopts new decree on the sale of unpackaged fruits and vegetables

The French government has adopted a new decree that will determine which fruits and vegetables may continue to be sold in plastic packaging.

It was published in the Official Gazette of the French Republic on June 21. The regulations took effect on July 1, 2023. In order to enable the reduction of packaging stocks, a transitional period will apply until December 31, 2023.

The background to this is the French environmental law, which prohibits the sale of fresh, unprocessed fruit and vegetables in packaging made wholly or partly of plastic. Exceptions to this are batch sizes exceeding 1.5 kg and varieties with a particularly high risk of spoilage, which have been determined by the new Decree No. 2023-478.
