Ireland: deposit system to be launched in 2024

Ireland began the first phase of its deposit system for single-use beverage containers at the start of December.

The scheme is now open for registrations from producers and retailers. In February 2024, the system will "go live" for consumers.

Once the system is fully operational, deposits will be levied on PET bottles and aluminum and steel cans with volumes of between 150 ml and 3 liters. The level of the deposit depends on the volume of the container: €0.15 for containers holding up to 500 ml, and €0.25 for bottles and cans with fill volumes exceeding 0.5 l. Milk and yogurt drinks are exempted from the deposit return scheme (DRS).
