The German commodity plastics market:
Industry grapples with raw material supply

08 Apr 2021 −

Upstream products, additives and ultimately standard polymers – all faced the same problem in March: a rather tense supply situation that was threatening to create bottlenecks for the entire plastics value chain and causing concern for EUWID sources.

Converters were facing the risk of standstills. “Producers are battening down the hatches“, “it's like the Wild West“ and “We don't see the any signs of a trend reversal yet“, market respondents told EUWID in March.

Polymer suppliers were unable to keep up with demand and were allocating volumes. Demand for all types of plastics far exceeded availability. The brisk demand seemed to have arisen not only out of concern for supply, but also as the result of an economic upturn, especially in China.
