The German paper and board market: Packaging paper prices spiral upwards with no end in sight

Prices for recycled corrugated case material continue to rise in Germany, but it is still unclear how much higher they will go.

While some paper manufacturers have announced temporary surcharges in response to the exploding energy costs, others have announced price increases with effect from November or December. While these adjustments in some cases are being attributed to the surging energy costs, they are not being described as a surcharge. Under these circumstances, there is widespread irritation and uncertainty amongst buyers. Not all paper mills are equally affected by the rise in energy costs, but almost all of them are jumping on the bandwagon, representatives of the corrugated industry complain. Converters have been confronted with price increases for containerboard almost monthly in 2021 and have only been able to pass these on with a delay.
