Market for glass packaging: Brisk demand and expensive cullet even under Covid-19

20 Apr 2020 −

Brisk demand for glass from the beverage and food industry continued unchanged during the pandemic in Germany in March, according to industry respondents.

Aside from the primary raw materials, the smelters need sufficient cullet for the production of glass packaging. Even before Covid-19, the supply of cullet and its price was an issue along the supply chain from the glass processors to the smelters and fillers.

An increase in the reusable glass segment, German and European expansion of capacity in the glass industry and steep quality standards were impacting on the availability and price of cullet, according to a report published in EUWID Packaging Markets 8/2020
